Monk, for exemple, is an excellent job to start with. I'm replaying the whole game right now and got Vaan as a Monk at the start. He does decent damage, good combo rate (about 3 or 4 hits pretty often) and a surprising evasion rate in the early game. Balthier is my Bushi, which can also combo very well.Ashe is decent physically and top tier magically, great for hybrid roles like samurai or pure magic roles. Penelo is top tier magically, awful for physical roles. Fran sucks all around statistically so generally best used on roles that are less stat important (breaker, machinist, time mage).
